A 22-year-old student at the University of New Hampshire was mysteriously found dead on December 5, hours after leaving the party due to fighting. Vincenzo Lirosi’s body was discovered by Durham police in a swampy area near the university campus on the afternoon of the 5th when he was reported missing the same day. So far, we know very little about what happened, with an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Lerosi is on a long list of college students who have been found dead under mysterious circumstances in recent months. Jilani Day’s body was found on the Illinois River on September 4, 10 days after he went missing. This is one of the highest-profile cases in 2021, especially since Day’s family refuses to believe that he drowned when he was an expert swimmer. The case has also sparked outrage, as it took police 19 days to identify her remains, raising allegations of racism, as it took only two days to identify Gabby Petto’s remains.
On the other hand, Lerosi’s body was immediately identified, and his family was informed. Durham Police Chief Rene Kelly said in a statement: “While this is not the result we all hoped for, we are grateful that we were able to locate Vincenzo and bring his family closer together.”
At the moment, it is not clear what happened to the 22-year-old. He was reportedly attending a college freight party on the evening of December 4, where he allegedly got into a fight. “It’s not like that, this is his first fight,” noted Jordan Blanchard, a former roommate and close friend of Lerosi’s. He told WMUR-TV, “They kicked him out and told him to go home. That’s when he went into the woods.”
It happened around 1.30 am on December 5, and when Lerosi did not return, he was reported missing at 3.00 am. “We started thinking about how he would think, and we started walking on different trails in the woods,” Blanchard said, but he and a few others lost when no trace of him was found. I agreed. Durham Police then stepped in and began searching the area with the help of State Police, Fish and Game, UNH Police, Strafford County Sheriff, New Hampshire State Liver App, and Search and New England K-9 Rescue.
The multi-agency effort ended at about 1:20 pm in a swampy area near Coe Drive in Durham, where Lirosi’s body was found. Besides confirming the discovery, police have not commented on the condition of the body or its surroundings, so there is no way to determine what happened to Lerosi. The university also confirmed the discovery in a tweet: “We share with all our hearts that the search for Vincenzo Lerosi did not end as we expected.” He added: “Authorities are still investigating the cause of death, but it is not considered a suspect at the moment.”
The university followed a series of tweets promising to share additional information and announcing help and assistance to everyone affected by Lerosi’s death. The university also urged students to seek mental health counselling. We will update it as more details are announced.
