Trey Bartholomew, who was armed with a sword, shot and killed by a police officer in Pennsburg on Tuesday, February 9. He was a borough resident.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Montgomery County district attorney’s office, Bartholomew, of Valley Court, was armed with a “samurai-type sword” and charged at the officer, who shot him.
Bartholomew died at the scene of the shooting, which happened shortly before 8 p.m. at Eighth Street and Long Alley.
He was 27 years old.

According to a news release from the district attorney, Upper Perk police officers were dispatched after someone called 911 and reported a family member armed with a sword was threatening to harm others.
“According to the initial investigation, an Upper Perk police officer arrived with his vehicle lights/siren activated, and he was charged by the man,” the news release said.
“Neighbors reported hearing three shots, and the man was struck. Police officers immediately rendered first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.”
The names of the police officers involved are not being released as county detectives and the district attorney investigate.
The samurai-type sword was recovered by the body.
