Simon Howard Arrested
A man who ran a stately home featured in major TV dramas Bridgerton and Brideshead Revisited has been charged with child sex offences.
Simon Howard, 65, is due before Scarborough magistrates on Monday accused of indecent assault and inciting an act of gross indecency.
Mr Howard managed the Castle Howard estate in North Yorkshire from 1983 until 2015.
In a statement, he denied the charges in the “strongest possible terms”.
The family statement added: “The incident is said to have taken place in early 1984 in Simon Howard’s home when he was married to his first wife.
“Simon Howard’s whole family are shocked by these allegations and are fully supportive of his confidence that he is innocent of all charges.”
A statement to the media issued on behalf of Mr Howard, who stepped down after 30 years in charge of the Ryedale stately home in 2014, said: ‘Following an initial interview under police caution in July 2018, the Hon Simon Howard of Malton, North Yorkshire, has been charged under the Sexual Offences Act 1956 and is due to appear at Scarborough Magistrates Court on Monday, February 15.
On Bridgerton’s release, Sally Joynson, chief executive at Screen Yorkshire, said: ‘The global success of Bridgerton demonstrates Yorkshire’s robust credentials as a world-leading destination for filming and Castle Howard looks magnificent on screen in the drama, where it features as the location for Simon Basset’s estate.’
