Robert Kekaula, whose outsized personality and generosity made him one of Hawaii’s most recognizable personalities, died this morning.
Kekaula was KITV’s assistant news director and Spectrum Sports’ play-by-play announcer for University of Hawaii football telecasts.
But the multi-talented Kekaula was best known for his decades-long career as a sportscaster, where he delivered reports with the vibrancy to match his bright custom-tailored aloha shirts.
His contacts were so strong in the UH sports community that colleagues nicknamed him the “General Manager.”

Robert Kekaula, a longtime journalist and sportscaster in Hawaii, died Saturday morning surrounded by his family.
Kekaula passed away at 8:25 a.m., according to family members.
In a statement, his family said:
“We have heavy hearts this morning as our ‘ohana has lost its mighty wings. He lived his life his way and was so much to so many people. His heart was full of love for his family, sports, and most of all, music. Our wings are broken, but we will fly one day again.

The exact cause of his death is unknown at this time.
Career
Robert Kekaula, a longtime Hawaiian journalist and sports spokesman, died on Saturday morning, June 19, with his family. According to family members, Kekaula, the editor-in-chief of KITV4, died at 8.25 a.m. at 56.
Kekaula joins a list of recently deceased journalists. On June 16, Dick Stolley, who published key material about the JFK assassination in 1963, died at 92. Also, in June, Christopher Sign, the television host who wrote Bill Clinton’s revelation, was found dead.
