Missing Markham Couple
A body has been recovered, and one arrest has been made in connection with the case of the missing couple from Markham.
York Regional Police investigators found the remains of one person at Twin Creeks Landfill and Environmental Center in Watford, Ontario, where they believe the second body is also located.
Police said Quoc Tran and Kristy Nguyen were murdered at 111 Zenway Blvd. in Vaughan, where they were last seen around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 18, 2021.
Police did not indicate which body was recovered but said Quoc Tran, 37, and Kristy Nguyen, 25, were “victims of foul play in a targeted attack.” Police said that the Markham couple was last seen near a shopping center in Vaughn around 5:30 p.m. on Sept 18.
York Regional police’s homicide unit recovered one body at the Waste Management-run landfill and was arrested in connection with what they’re calling an ongoing homicide investigation in Vaughan. Police released photos of one suspect and, with help from the public, arrested him Wednesday.
One Suspect Arrested Another is Wanted
Recaldo Liburd is facing two counts of accessory after the fact of murder, police said.
But a second suspect was still wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant for two counts of first-degree murder as of Friday afternoon.
Phuong Tan Nguyen is “considered armed and dangerous,” police said.
“If seen, do not approach him, instead call 911 immediately,” police cautioned. “Investigators are reminding the public that anyone who is, or has, assisted the suspect may be subject to criminal charges.”
Police also “encouraged” the suspect to talk to a lawyer and turn himself him.
A York Regional police spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
A Lambton OPP spokesperson said he had “no details” about the investigation.
A Waste Management spokesperson did not immediately respond to a voicemail asking for more information.
