According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Larry Steven Grogan is a Madison County man who wanted for questioning in the killing of a mail carrier who was wounded Saturday in Banks County after he shot a gun at two deputies, who returned fire.
According to Jesse Maddox, agent in charge of the Athens GBI office, Grogan was shot once and admitted to a hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive.
He is 49 years old.
According to the sheriff’s office, Postman Asa “Junior” Wood, 59, of Commerce, was shot to death Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. while delivering mail on his rural route along Hebron Road in Banks County.
During the investigation, Grogan was identified as a suspect, and his vehicle was spotted by deputies about 6:30 p.m. on Highway 51, a few miles east of Homer. But when deputies attempted a traffic stop, the car sped off, according to the report.
A deputy conducted a PIT manoeuvre during the pursuit, causing the Blazer to run off the road near the intersection with Payne Road, investigators said.
The GBI said Grogan exited his vehicle and fired a rifle at the deputies, who returned fire. The deputies were not injured.
Charges are pending against Grogan. He is expected to survive his wound.
Because the deputies were involved in the shooting of Grogan, the GBI was asked to investigate that aspect of the case. The U.S. Postal Inspector’s Office is assisting in the slaying investigation.
