Josiah Johnson tried to rob the cab driver after becoming picked up in Gresham and begging for a ride to the Aloha area, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Due to the long way, the driver asked Johnson for pre-payment or collateral, so Johnson gave the driver his cell phone, the sheriff’s office says.
Deputies arrested a man early Tuesday morning after they say he attempted to rob a cab driver at gunpoint and was next shot into the hip with his gun.

Johnson then picked out a gun, aimed it at the back of the driver’s head, and started yelling at him, but the cab driver couldn’t get, deputies said. The driver told detectives he saw an opening to grab the gun, causing a fight that ended with the gun firing and beating Johnson. The bullet started Johnson’s left hip and exited out his left buttocks, investigators said.
Johnson and the cab driver exited the car, where the fight continued. The cab driver at one point when the struggle was able to fight the gun away and drive it away from both of them, yelling to friends for help.

Once in the Aloha area, the driver stayed at a home near the junction of Southwest 188th Court and Southwest Farmington Road. Johnson supposedly tried to pay the driver with a fake $100 bill, but the driver quickly recognized the bill as fraudulent and did not return Johnson’s phone, according to investigators.

Community members came to help and called 911. Deputies answered at 12:20 a.m. and arrested Johnson at the scene. Johnson was brought to an area hospital, treated for his wounds, and then delivered. He was caught at the Washington County Jail, where he faces charges including theft in the first degree, assault in the fourth degree, threatening, illegal use of a weapon, criminal possession of a forged tool in the first step, and possession of a regulated substance – schedule IV.
