Officers were called to the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast to report a shooting shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday. They arrived to find an adult male, later identified as 23-year-old Juwan Smith, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
A suspect, 24-year-old Javon Duckwilder, of Southeast, was taken into custody at the scene on preliminary charges of first-degree murder.
First Degree Murder Charges
Police said Duckwilder is now charged with October 5, 2020, murder of 23-year-old Alexander Nwogu of Blacksburg, Virginia.
Nwogu, who had graduated with honors from Virginia Tech University just five months prior, was shot and killed at the Shell Gas Station in the 4900 block of Connecticut Avenue.
According to D.C. court records, Duckwilder was charged with assault and attempted possession of a prohibited weapon in a March 2016 domestic violence case.
Those charges were dropped two months later for want of prosecution. Last September, the D.C. Superior Court issued a warrant for his arrest for being a fugitive from justice with vehicle theft charges in Maryland.
