Giorgos Karaivaz Shot Dead
A veteran Greek crime reporter was gunned down Friday near his home in southern Athens, police said.
Giorgos Karaivaz was found dead early in the afternoon with several gunshot wounds beside his car in the Alimos suburb, police said.
Private Star TV, for which he worked, said Karaivaz had just returned from work. It said two men on a motorcycle drew up beside him and the passenger fired at least ten shots.
The Greek government, opposition parties, and the country’s main journalists’ union strongly condemned the attack.

“The murder … shocked us all,” government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni said. “The authorities are investigating the case, to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.”
Authorities said Karaivaz had not requested police protection or reported any death threats.
In a career that spanned decades, Karaivaz worked for several Greek newspapers and broadcast media.
Karaivaz, well known by the television audience for his reports of ‘black’ and the work of the police, was returning home after participating in a broadcast on the Star station.
His name is linked in particular to the case of a multi-faceted corruption ring involving several police officers, lawyers, and businessmen with six-figure turnovers, in which a former parliamentarian Anel (right-wing party and former ally) was also engaged of Syriza) and the entrepreneur Dimitris Malamas, murdered in October 2019 in Athens with 18 Kalashnikov shots.
The journalist was married and the father of a teenager. He had worked for years for Ant1 TV before moving to Star and was a collaborator of the newspaper Eleftheros Typos.
Social media were immediately flooded with messages of condolence and on the journalist’s website, bloko. gr, the reporter’s collaborators wrote that “Giorgos Karaivaz is no longer with us.
“The murder of journalist George Karaivaz shocked us all. Authorities are already investigating the case to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice. We express our pain and our sincere condolences to his family, ”said government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni.
While arson attacks or vandalism against media outlets are common in Greece, journalists have rarely been targeted. Last July, tabloid owner Stefanos Chios was shot and wounded by a man with a covered face, but he survived.
The most well-known precedent is that of the investigative journalist Socratis Giolias, killed in 2010, who was working at the time on a corruption investigation according to public TV Net. A far-left group claimed responsibility for the murder, but the case was never solved.
