He has been locked up for 20 years after he was found guilty of killing 23-year-old Andreea Celea in the Dominican Republic.

His age is unclear.

Andreea Celea Murder

Celea had moved to the capital of Santo Domingo with her family from Constanta in Romania and struck up a relationship with Villanueva, according to Observatory News.

She ended the relationship a year before she was found dead on the pavement outside the W&P Hotel in the capital on August 31, 2018.

Jurors heard how she was seen on security cameras at the hotel’s reception with Villanueva before she died.

They went up to an eighth-floor room in the hotel and Celea’s lifeless body was found hours later by a member of staff after hearing a thud. Emergency services rushed to the scene and desperately tried to save Celea.

According to local news site Listin Diario, she had planned to spend three days at the hotel with her ex-boyfriend to celebrate her birthday.

Jurors heard how Celea had taken out a restraining order against Villanueva just days earlier for “violent behavior”.

After examining 4,313 pages of messages and telephone calls and 787 photos and videos, jurors found Villanueva guilty of murder and aggravated domestic violence.

Villanueva’s lawyers tried to argue that Celea had taken her own life “in a fit of jealousy”.

But investigators found her injuries were inconsistent with suicide.

An expert witness said there were signs of a struggle.

“There was the use of external force in the fall and she presented injuries from fighting and self-defense,” the witness said, according to local reports.

Gabriel Villanueva Jailed

Villanueva will serve his sentence at the San Pedro de Macoris Correction and Rehabilitation Centre, where he has been detained for the last three years.

He has also been ordered to pay five million pesos (£63,683) in compensation.

Gabriel Villanueva was sentenced to 20 years in prison and the payment of 5 million pesos for the murder of Andreea Celea.

The court said that there was no theft of Andreea Celea’s cell phone, but that it was a circumstance that accompanied the murder, to erase evidence and messages.

In addition, it determined that the victim died due to precipitation, due to impulse, which could not be self-impulse, due to an external agent, Gabriel Villanueva having been the only one present in the room.
