According to police, Erin Garcia was arrested after she allegedly dragged her 8-year-old daughter and a bystander with a vehicle after the child tried to stop her mother from driving under the influence late Thursday night.

The incident began when the mother, identified as Garcia, decided to leave her mother’s home in Placentia, California. At the same time, she was still apparently intoxicated, the Placentia Police Department stated in a news release.

Earlier this week, Garcia of Laguna Niguel left her mother’s home in Placentia while allegedly intoxicated, police said in a press release.

Garcia’s 8-year-old daughter became worried about her mother driving in that state and grabbed the door handle of the passenger side of her car, telling her to stop, said the Placentia Police Department.

According to authorities, Garcia looked at her daughter and proceeded to drive away, dragging the child alongside the vehicle for around 300 feet.

An adult male bystander then noticed the situation and intervened, trying to aid the young girl away from the car alongside the child’s grandmother. Garcia then drove away once more, this time with the bystander now being dragged for a “short distance,” per police.

After the unidentified man was able to get away from the vehicle, police said that Garcia then drove away from the crime scene altogether.

A short time later, Garcia was found hiding behind bushes in the backyard of the grandmother’s home. Officers attempted to take the woman into custody, though she initially resisted before she was successfully captured without later incident, police shared.

The child and the man involved in the incident were both brought to hospitals within the area with “moderate injuries,” police noted.

Arrested

According to police, police searched for Garcia and located the woman hiding behind some bushes in the back of her mother’s home. She allegedly kicked at officers while they tried to take her into custody but was ultimately arrested.

The release stated that she was taken to Orange County Jail and booked on suspicion of child endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon, battery against a peace officer, and resisting a peace officer.

The child and the bystander were taken to local hospitals, where they were treated for moderate injuries.
