Donna Traynor is an Irish journalist and broadcaster. She is best known as the former anchor of BBC Newsline. She resigned from BBC Northern Ireland on 15 November 2021.

She has also hosted Children in Need, the Balmoral Show, Country Times, and education programs. The former BBC Newsline anchorwoman has been nominated twice by the Royal Television Society awards for the Best Regional TV Presenter category.


She was born on 31 October 1965 in Lisburn and grew up in Dublin.

Resigned from BBC

On 15 November 2021, BBC news presenter Donna Traynor announced her resignation from the corporation immediately. The broadcaster said in the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that, after almost 33 years, I am leaving the job that I love and resigning from BBC Northern Ireland with immediate effect.

“Because this is the subject of ongoing Employment Tribunal and other legal proceedings, I am not able to respond to any questions or comments about my reasons for leaving the organization.”

A BBC Northern Ireland spokesman said: “We do not comment on individual staff matters.”


She began her broadcasting career with RTE in Dublin before moving to BBCNI in 1989 and presented radio news bulletins before moving into television. On 31 August 1994, when the IRA announced its ceasefire, Donna, reporting for Radio Ulster, broke the news to listeners.

She presented the IRA Decommissioning program and the BBC Newsline special on Devolution Day. Both picked up an Irish Film and Television Award for Best News Programme.


Who is Donna Traynor married to? She is married to Ronan Kelly, a training consultant and fellow broadcaster. The couple, who married in 1992, first met when Donna, then aged 21, was a student on work experience at Downtown Radio, where Ronan, seven years her senior, was a DJ.

“We got married in October 1992 in Dublin when Ronan was working for UTV and I was with BBCNI and our honeymoon was a tour of the Far East. The rest as they say is history,” Donna told Belfast Telegraph. Donna, who was born in Lisburn and grew up in Dublin, is deaf in one ear.

Former BBC Newsline presenter Donna Traynor is in good health. It is her husband who has battled throat cancer in the past. In July 2008, broadcaster Ronan Kelly revealed that “he has been fighting throat cancer for two months.” The biopsy results showed her husband had a tumor on his right vocal chord. However, it was in its early stages and was treatable. Her partner was “in sickness and in health,” as she said at the time. Donna has been actively involved in nursing Ronan back to good health.
