Carlos Stephens is a former football player at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who has been arrested after a nursing student was shot to death on campus last week, police say.
Birmingham police announced on Monday, December 21, that Carlos Londarrius Stephens is charged with murder in the death of 20-year-old Destiny Washington. Police say Stephens shot and killed Washington on December 17 following a botched sale of AirPods.

The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. outside of the student center at University Boulevard and 14th Street South, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

Carlos Stephens Arrested
A suspect is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a nursing student on UAB’s campus.
Police on Monday announced the arrest of 22-year-old Carlos Londarrius Stephens. He is charged in the killing of 20-year-old Destiny Washington.
Stephens was a standout football player at Thompson High School and then went on to play at UAB for his freshman year where he also excelled on the field. He is still a student but does not play football any longer.
UAB officials confirmed Stephens was a student-athlete in 2017 and said they continue to support Birmingham police in the ongoing investigation.

Shooting Incident
The deadly shooting at 9:40 p.m. Thursday outside the student center at University Boulevard and 14th Street South.
Washington was with her boyfriend and was there to sell someone – a person police now say was Stephens – a pair of Airpods.

The family said the boyfriend realized the money was fake and began to drive off and that’s when the suspect fired a shot into the vehicle, striking Washington.

The boyfriend drove her to Children’s of Alabama – the closest hospital – where she was pronounced dead.
Stephens, of Alabaster, surrendered to police on Saturday. He’s been held in the Birmingham City Jail pending formal warrants, which were obtained on Monday. He will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.
Destiny Washington’s Bio
Washington was studying to become a nurse. She was completing classes at Lawson State through UAB’s Joint Admission program and was set to graduate in May 2021 as a registered nurse. Though initially, she wanted to work in neonatal care, she had changed her mind and planned on becoming a traveling nurse.
