According to WBTW and WMBF, the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Monday near Meadow View and Linkhaw roads in Lumberton. Brittany Hunt, 23, of Lumberton, was shot and lost control of the vehicle before plunging into a canal, the news outlets reported.
Hunt was pronounced dead at UNC Health Southeastern, Lumberton police said. Crews also rushed three passengers – a 20-year-old man and two children – to a nearby hospital, the news outlets reported. Their condition was not immediately available, according to WMBF.
Family Statement
Hunt’s sister told WBTW that the children in the vehicle were Hunt’s 5-year-old twins.

Hunt also had a third child, who was not in the vehicle, the outlet reported.
Police Report
Investigators said someone fired shots into the car while it was driving along the 3000 block of Meadow View Road.
They said Hunt lost control of the car and crashed into the canal.
Hunt died from her injuries after being taken to UNC Health Southeastern.
The other adult and the two children inside the car were taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses and working to identify the shooter or shooters at this time.
