“He was a generous and selfless man who carried over to his acting, but more importantly, it was who he was for his family and friends,” the actor’s widow, Shelly LaFleur wrote on social media, according to the outlet. “I was so fortunate to have had a 43-year relationship with a man who cherished me and who I adored. Art was larger than life and meant the world to us.”
LaFleur died at home in Los Angeles and was cracking jokes until the end, The Sun reported.
He had a late start in acting — not until 1975 when at 32, he moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, the paper reported. Before acting, he worked in sales and the restaurant business, according to IMDB.
However, he was perhaps best known for his role as baseball great Babe Ruth in the beloved 1993 coming-of-age film The Sandlot and played Chick Gandil, the Chicago White Sox player known for his involvement in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, in 1989’s Field of Dreams.
