Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman was arrested on domestic violence allegations over the weekend, records show.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office records show the Overland Park Police Department arrested Coleman on suspicion of domestic battery. He was arrested at around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, booked into jail at around 12:45 a.m., and remained in custody late Sunday morning.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Age

He is 21 years old.

Domestic Violence Charge

The booking report states “no priors” alongside the charge. But Coleman, a 21-year-old legislator from Kansas City, Kan., has a history that includes domestic violence allegations.

Earlier in October, Coleman was banned from Kansas Department of Labor premises for alleged “disruptive, intimidating and berating” behavior.

Coleman was reprimanded but not formally disciplined the last session by a Kansas House committee for behavior before his election as a legislator, including allegations of harassment, bullying, and stalking.

The panel dismissed charges because the actions took place before the first-term lawmaker assumed office. Democrats have disputed him.

During the August partisan primary against former Rep. Stan Frownfelter, Coleman admitted to cyberbullying and revenge porn while in middle school, gaining national attention in the process.

Investigation

Coleman has been accused of hitting, choking, and leaving violent messages with an ex-girlfriend. He has also suggested he wanted a former Republican lawmaker to die of COVID-19 and promised to arrange a “hit” on Gov. Laura Kelly.

A committee investigating the claims found sufficient evidence to believe the pattern existed but opted only to issue a letter of reprimand because the abusive behavior occurred before he took office.
